ICE HOCKEY GLENS FALLS -- Marc Carpenter finished with a hat trick to help lift Glens Falls to a 7-3 triumph Wednesday in a Division II semifinal game of the Section II Ice Hockey Tournament. "Marc is a lot of talent and energy wrapped up in a small bundle," said Glens Falls coach Don Miller, who said Carpenter may not appear to be physically imposing but he is certainly a force on the ice. Tom Girard scored two goals, including the game's first, and T.J. Palmer had one goal and two assists. The Indians benefited from strong defense by Josh Tefft, Tim Powers, and Kevin Vogel. They helped keep in check South Glens Falls' Joe Brewer, who had one goal and an assist, and especially Jim Greene, who was limited to one goal. "Jimmy Greene is just a fantastic hockey player," coach Miller said. "He is a fast skater and an excellent shooter," The game meant a lot to its participants and the fans in attendance. "These kids grew up playing Adirondack youth hockey with one another," Miller said. "They are friends off the ice and competitors on the ice." Glens Falls (15-8-1) advances to meet LaSalle of Troy on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Bethlehem Ice Group Arena for the sectional championship. Glens Falls split with LaSalle during the regular season. Glens Falls, O'Connor 18 saves Indians defeat SGF Wednesday, February 9, 2000 The Post-Star Ice Hockey By Ryan O'Halloran, Sports Writer It took a little over a period, but once the Glens Falls High School hockey team awakened from its slumber, its offense followed suit. The result was seven unanswered goals and 41 shots on net as the Indians beat South Glens Falls Tuesday night at the Civic Center, 8-3. "We should have never been in that position," Glens Falls coach Don Miller said of the early 3-1 deficit. "The kids were taking South a little too lightly. But when we went down, they knew they were in a hole." Earlier in the season, Glens Falls had steamrolled South, 9-1. This time around, the story was different for the first half of the game before Glens Falls took the lead for good with 6:59 left in the second period. Five Glens Falls players had multi-point nights, led by a five-point effort from sophomore winger Brian Herlihy (one goal, four assists). Ray Sipowicz and Marc Carpenter each scored two goals, and Ben Tefft and Chris Fields tallied three and two assists, respectively. Many of those points came with the man advantage. Glens Falls was 3 for 7 on the power play, and Carpenter added a short-handed tally for good measure. "They move the puck very well," South coach Bill Carey said. "They're also good at pulling people out of position and once you start chasing, that isn't good." Despite Glens Falls' superior depth, South led 2-0 late in the first period after goals from Dan Hart and Anson Wood 81 seconds apart. Just 13 seconds into the second period, South took a 3-1 lead on Jim Greene's bullet of a slap shot from the top of the left circle. "We're pretty aware of Jim Greene and his talents -- he's their star and if you let him loose, he'll burn you," Miller said of Greene, who has 17 goals. Soon after Greene's goal, though, Glens Falls sealed things up defensively, which translated into chance after chance at the other end. Twenty-seven seconds after Greene's 17th goal of the season, South went down a man, and Glens Falls needed only eight seconds to get back in the game. Fields, operating to the right of the goal, centered a pass to Carpenter at the edge of the crease. Carpenter's first shot was stopped by Matt Beaulieu, but Carpenter -- untouched by South's defense -- pounced on the rebound and slammed it past Beaulieu. At the 6:57 mark, Glens Falls tied the game on Sipowicz's first goal. Tefft streaked down the right side and fed Sipowicz, who was charging for the goal. The advantage grew to 5-3 after two periods on goals by Herlihy (13:01) and Sipowicz (14:29). "That last goal at the end of the second didn't help things," Carey said. Neither did the play of Herlihy, who has 29 points on the season for Glens Falls. "He's good every night," Miller said. "He plays like he's 6-foot-6 and just plays. He has great hands, never lets down and never says, 'I can't do this.' He says, 'I'm going to do this.' Carpenter and him are cut from the same cloth." Glens Falls, now 13-6-1, remains in second place of the CDIHL behind LaSalle Institute with South in third place at 11-7-1. The teams will probably meet in the first round of the sections later this month. Thursday, February 3, 2000 The Times-Union Glens Falls rallies past ShenPowers' goal with 3:11 left gives Indians the victory Glens Falls 3 Shen 2 GLENS FALLS -- Tim Powers' goal with 3:11 remaining capped a brilliant comeback by Glens Falls as the Indians rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the third period to beat Shenendehowa 3-2, handing the Plainsmen only their second Capital District High School Hockey League loss of the season. Glens Falls (7-1-1 league, 10-6-1 overall) fell back 2-0 when Shenendehowa's Brent Douglas put a rebound from close range past Glens Falls goalie Matt O'Connor at 5:41 of the final period. Shenendehowa, which entered the game at 8-1-1 in league and 18-1-1 overall, appeared well on its way to victory. But the unflappable Indians scored three goals in about a four-minute span -- the first and third goals while skating with a man advantage -- to wrest the game from the stunned Plainsmen. Defenseman Ben Tefft got the comeback started when, stationed to Shen goalie Erik Manke's right, he poked a loose puck that had popped out of the netting past Manke at 7:57. Brian Herlihy tied it at 2 just a minute and 42 seconds later, putting in a rebound of Kyle Joly's slap shot. Glens Falls completed the improbable uprising with another power-play goal when Powers fired home a wrist shot at 11:49. "Some guys stepped up tonight,'' said Glens Falls coach Don Miller, who said he gave his team a "pretty good chewing out'' between the second and third periods. Manke came on with 8:47 left in the first period after starting goaltender Brian McDonald had to leave the game with a head injury after he was interfered with by a Glens Falls player near the net. Shenendehowa coach Bill MacArthur said McDonald was OK but kept him out of the game as a precaution. MacArthur was displeased with the outcome, a disastrous start to a critical three-game stretch in which his team must play its three toughest league opponents in eight nights. Shen plays Independent Division leader La Salle Institute, on Friday night and then has its long-awaited Suburban Division showdown with defending state champion Saratoga on Wednesday night. Saratoga (7-1-2 league) tied Shen on Jan. 12 at Saratoga. "My players are going to have to learn that the game is 45 minutes long,'' MacArthur said. "We let down and -- bingo! Glens Falls was right there. You can't make simple mistakes and take penalties the way we did. I give Glens Falls credit because they came back after they were outplayed for most of the night.'' Saturday, January 29, 2000 The RecordCadets exact revenge By Chris Fitz Gerald TROY -- After receiving a dose
of reality in its previous meeting with Glens Falls High, La Salle
Institute sensed it was time to get physical.
The Cadets played the body from the outset with an aggressive
checking style, and coupled with senior goaltender Matt Dominelli's
performance, La Salle produced one of its best defensive efforts of the
season.
Junior center Brian Mohan scored twice in the first period and
Dominelli protected the lead by making 38 saves as La Salle blanked
Glens Falls 2-0 Friday night at Hudson Valley Community College's Conway
Ice Arena.
With its Independent Division victory in the Capital District High
School Hockey League, the Cadets extended their unbeaten streak to 12
games at 11-0-1.
La Salle (10-1, 15-3-2) moved one step closer to securing the
Independent Division title and now leads Glens Falls (6-1-1, 9-6-1) by
7½ points in the standings.
Dominelli was required to make 17 saves in the first period to help
set the tone.
"This was a big game and we needed to redeem ourselves,"
said Dominelli, whose team suffered a 7-3 defeat at Glens Falls.
"We came out strong and our main thing is our ability to check.
When we take the body, we do well as a team.
"Defensively, that's what we mainly focused on. They're a good
team, but we
needed to take the body to them to get them out of their game,"
Dominelli added.
That's exactly what the Cadets did in the first period, which
featured a series of bone-crushing hits.
While Glens Falls enjoyed a 17-8 advantage in shots in the opening
period, the Indians had nothing to show for it.
"Dominelli covered everything up and played well on his rebounds
and we just couldn't get any past him," Glens Falls coach Don
Miller said. "They seemed to have improved a lot physically since
last year. ... La Salle is ranked No. 2 in the state for a good
reason."
While on the power play, Cadets senior right winger Andrew Carnevale
carried the puck in front and was stopped by Glens Falls goaltender Matt
O'Connor. Mohan lifted in the rebound to O'Connor's glove side for a 1-0
lead 2:01 into the game.
Nearly six minutes later, Mohan struck again, converting off a crisp
give-and-go play with freshman right winger Eric Cassidy.
On a 2-on-1 break, Mohan passed the puck over to Cassidy, who in turn
slipped the puck under a defenseman to Mohan, who ripped a shot past
O'Connor's glove for a 2-0 advantage 8:27 into the first period.
"We were out there to get them and we wanted to play
physical," Mohan said. "We started a little slow this season,
but now we're getting things together."
Then it was up to Dominelli. The senior made nine saves in the second
period and 12 more in the third.
The shutout was the second of the season for Dominelli. He also
combined on a blanking with Andrew Bailey.
Among his best stops were a save on Glens Falls' sniper Marc
Carpenter with 10:30 left in the second period. Carpenter lifted his
arms in celebration, but Dominelli had smothered the puck under his
pads.
He also made a clutch pad save on junior defenseman Kyle Joly with
8:20 remaining in the game. Led by senior Adam Samiof and junior Justin
Burke, La Salle's defense helped close the door on the Indians.
"I felt relaxed and I saw pretty much everything,"
Dominelli said. "The puck looked like the size of a beach ball and
it usually doesn't seem like that. It sure did tonight, though. I was
giving up a lot of rebounds, but (my defensemen) were clearing them out
great."
The win could go a long way as La Salle and Glens Falls will likely
meet again in Division II sectional play.
"To get out of the section, we're going to have to play them
(Glens Falls)," Dominelli said. "And to get past them, we're
going to have to get by them any way we can. The win over Shenendehowa
was nice, but to get to states, we have to play well against Glens
Falls."

Saturday, January 8, 2000 The Post-Star G.F claims victory By Jim Tracy Ice Hockey GLENS FALLS -- It's easy to see Glens Falls has a pretty good hockey team this year. And listening to the comments after the game, you can deduce one thing. The team plans on going a long way. Glens Falls cruised past Troy/Columbia, 7-1, Friday night at Fireroad rink in a Capital District Ice Hockey League game. The team's biggest complaint was the narrow 1-0 margin it held after the first period. But the tight first period was the only trouble Glens Falls had on this night. "In the first period we were doing things that were worrying me," said Glens Falls coach Don M iller. "We didn't play as hard as we could in that first period," said Glens Falls defender Jason Herrington. But after the first period, forget about it. Five different Glens Falls players scored goals as the Indians cruised to their fifth league win of the season in as many tries. The team improved to 6-4-1 overall. Coach Miller knows how deep and talented his squad is because his biggest relief after the game was he got to play most of his kids. He has 27 on the roster, and the last guys off the bench proved they were no slouches either. "The biggest pleasure was I got a lot of kids in the game," he said. "They work hard in practice every day but it's hard to find a place for every one of them." "All the way," is what Glens Falls' Ray Sipowicz said the team's plans are this year. Sipowicz scored a second-period goal to give Glens Falls a 3-0 lead. His goal came less than 2:00 after Brian Herlihy scored. Glens Falls scored three goals within the first four minutes of the third period to break open a 3-1 contest and put the game away. The Indians could have broken the game open earlier with any luck as they outshot Troy all night and finished with a 37-9 shots-on-goal advantage. Sipowicz was the only multiple goal scorer for Glens Falls with two goals, one in the second period and another in the third period. Herlihy, Tom Girard, Marc Carpenter and Ben Tefft also scored goals for the Indians. Thursday, January 6, 2000 The Post-Star
