"Our Home Away From Home"

Damian Carpenter '98

The hockey rink on Fire Road, next to the YMCA, stands by itself nestled in a dense arrangement of ageless trees and thick conglomerates of snow covered underbrush.  The three flagpoles standing in front of the building proudly display the flags of New York State, the United States, and Canada.  Walking through the dirty slush covering the asphalt parking lot tattered equipment bags and wooden or aluminum sticks, depending on their preference.

Open the door step inside.  The coolness hits your face relentlessly, and the smell of the ice lodges itself into the nose so deep that it can be tasted in the back of the throat.

God I love that smell!

Familiar faces, unfamiliar faces, pass by while ascending towards the locker room.  Past the player's benches and penalty boxes made of beaten wood, painted and repainted red, but to no avail, they still look worn with character.  We all have seen these benches more than we've seen our beds.  Some people, who should remain nameless, were even more familiar with the good ole "sin bin".   A few more steps.

The locker room door opens.  Walk in, the opaque paint on the walls are peeling from the moisture.  And the smell, appealing to some, unappealing to others, with years of hard work and sweat have been imprinted into the walls and the overall atmosphere of the room.  The red and black lockers inside the gate each have their own story and character.  The chatter of the teammates surrounds the mind.

"You think we'll win?"

"What line is starting?'

"I'm gonna light this goalie up!"

Throw on the equipment, the proud Indians jersey, lace up the skates, and it's time to put on the game face. it's "GO" time. The captains bring the team together for the pre-game cheer:

"All for one, one for all, let's kick some ass and have a ball!"
(This cheer being in honor of Vogs)

Or in most cases, just simply:

"INDIANS!"
